Snapshots: California Poppies

California Poppies

These shots were snapped during a bike ride on the UCSC campus bike trail yesterday afternoon. I felt compelled to brake and take a pause after I noticed that even the usually anxious squirrels had stopped to admire the California poppies and the butterflies that flirted with them in the flawless breeze. Birds were chuckling out whistles and the hidden cicadas chuckled out their unique steel buzzes from underneath the tall grasses and short trees. The wholeness of the ocean-blue sky was a perfect compliment to those miraculously orange poppies that kept appearing beyond the distance, like stars to well-adjusted eyes in the night. It’s times like these that I remember just how lucky I am. Could there be a more lovely place to be in the Spring than on a bike in Santa Cruz?
