Get ready to jump on board – the Arts Council Santa Cruz County is about to launch the second annual All Hands on Deck event.
This highly anticipated exhibition and fundraising raffle event reflects some of Santa Cruz’s most beloved features: iconic skate culture, exceptional creativity, and lively community spirit. Hosted by the Arts Council and held at the Tannery Arts Center’s Radius Gallery, All Hands on Deck presents work by 23 local artists who have transformed skateboard decks into one-of-a-kind art pieces.
Each special edition deck spotlights artwork by some of this area’s most talented painters, printmakers, muralists and graphic designers. Hats off to the eclectic artists contributing decks in the 2017 show: Adam Wider, Allison Garcia, Andrea Borsuk, Beth Shields, Caryn Owen, Claire Learner, Danny Fernandez, Elliot Bliss, Howard Kaneg, Irene O’Connell, Jacob Seedman, Janet Ferraro, John McKinley, Judi Oyama, Julie Rawls, Liam Cliff, Louanne Kover, Lynda Watson, Myra Eastman, Paul Roehl, Rob Bennett, Stacy Frank, and Taylor Reinhold.
The exhibition and raffle event highlight the work and people that make Santa Cruz renowned for expanding the arts and legendary for evolving skate culture. En masse, the decks represent the County’s diverse artistry. Individually, they reflect the unique personalities and creative styles of each artist. The artists have made blank, wood decks (donated by local skateboard company, NHS) their “canvas”, embellishing them with bold characters, vibrant colors, and expressive patterns.
The decks will be on exhibit at the wide-ranging Radius Gallery from June 1st through July 7th, 2017. Raffle tickets go on sale beginning on First Friday, June 2nd, when participants can start buying tickets per deck of choice. On June 14th from 6-8pm, the public is invited to the Artists’ Reception, where visitors can buy more raffle tickets and shake the 23 creative hands that have designed the original boards. The final First Friday and Raffle Drawing will be held on July 7th from 6-8pm, when lucky raffle winners will get to take home one of these imaginative custom-designed decks.
The fundraising raffle directly supports the Arts Council’s passionate work in promoting artists and bringing Santa Cruz County art to life in innovative, inspiring, and educational ways. The skate deck art show is just one of their many events when professional artists can share their work and art lovers can learn about, connect with, and invest in local work. In addition to All Hands on Deck, the Arts Council advocates for and advances creativity across the county with the ever-popular Open Studios Art Tour, Arts Education programs, Grants, Tech Assistance and Workforce Development for art individuals and organizations, and other outstanding cultural services.
All Hands on Deck is speeding round the corner – Starting June 1st, purchase your raffle ticket to win an art deck by calling the Arts Council Santa Cruz County at 831-475-9600, or stopping by Radius Gallery throughout the exhibition (open Wednesday -Sunday from 12-5pm.)
