This November 16 through December 31, 2017, the Santa Cruz Art League will present Art/Now/Next, an exhibition featuring 10 emerging local artists under the age of 45. In anticipation of this event, Local Santa Cruz has handed over the mic to some of the talented participating artists whose innovative work is coming into the spotlight.

Introducing…Danielle Peters! Danielle specializes in paper diaromas, sculpture, printmaking, and performance art. Using a blend of materials and multi-dimensional methods, she explores the connection between separate worlds – whether bodily, culturally, geographically, or spiritually. Her vibrant, intricate work evokes portals, patterns, and systems that appear otherworldly, mysterious, anatomical, and elemental.

Read on for an interview with Danielle Peters and learn more about this up-and-coming artist and her work.

Local Santa Cruz: Please tell us about your art. What inspires you and what is your preferred medium and creative process?

Danielle Peters: I use paper to create two and three-dimensional works and performances that examine micro and macrocosmic relationships, turning inward and outward, highlighting symbiosis between all things, including physical and metaphysical realms. I draw influence from music, dance, meditation, and nature.

Local Santa Cruz: What is your connection to Santa Cruz and how has it influenced your creative work?

Danielle Peters: I moved to Santa Cruz after visiting many times. The landscape, trails, and beaches drew me here. The flora and fauna have definitely influenced my work.

Local Santa Cruz: Tell us about the art you’ll be showing in Art/Now/Next. Why have you chosen the pieces that will be on display and what do they mean to you?

Danielle Peters: I will be showing various paper dioramas and sculptures. I think these pieces work well together. They are both very bodily and organic. The dioramas depict inner worlds, reminiscent of caves, arteries, or mouths; while the sculptures are more about surface: hair, feathers, and other textures.

Meet this inspiring artist in person at the Art/Now/Next Opening Reception: First Friday, December 1, 6-8pm at the Santa Cruz Art League.
