The people behind Idea Fab Labs have masterminded a contemporary version of the classic work space.
Located on the 2nd floor of the Wrigley Building on the West Side of Santa Cruz, Idea Fab Labs (IFL) is a multi-faceted work center equipped for people of all levels of creativity and craftsmanship. At IFL visitors can have special access to use high tech tools and design software, become more experienced through classes and workshops, and connect with like-minded members and projects.
Much like a gym system, visitors can benefit from the lab by signing up for a range of membership options that cater to individual goals. Instead of a workout from treadmills and weight machines, this setting offers members a workshop with access to traditional tools and equipment, digital fabrication, Safety and Basic Use classes, computer station/design software use, and access to the AutoDesk Design and Creation Suites.
IFL’s large open space has established work “zones” designated for many forms of creativity and craftsmanship. Their diverse collection of tools includes a Laser Cutter/Engraver, two Printrbot Simple Metal 3D printers, a Sense 3D Scanner, Makerbot Digitizer 3D Scanner, a Shopbot CNC Router Table, a Basic Wood Shop with CNC, Electronics/Micro-controller lab, Jewelry station, Textiles equipment, Screen Printing Zone, and an Audio Visual Zone.
In addition to the growing range of tools, classes and workshops, IFL’s member-driven system encourages visitors to join their welcoming community and collaborative environment. Knowing that inspiration strikes at all times of day or night, IFL caters to both early birds and night owls – all members are given building access from 8 am to 12 am.
Idea Fab Labs is also located in Chico. Based on its growing popularity and participants, it will be no surprise if the company continues to evolve as quickly as the fab ideas it generates.
