Palace Art and Office Supply

When the Trowbridge Family opened Palace Art & Office Supply on Pacific Avenue in 1949, it was a small mom-and-pop shop selling social stationary and gifts.

Several generations later, Palace Arts has evolved into one of this area’s leading independently owned businesses, and a valuable resource for local artists when supplies (or inspiration) run out.

In 1992, the Trowbridges opened a second retail venue in Capitola. Now the two stores offer the creative community as many varieties of art and craft materials as there are art forms. Whether you’re a professional or aspiring artist, teacher or student, the stores sell every tool needed to paint, draw, sketch, sew, design, photograph, build and more. They are also filled to the brim with the gifts and stationary they were known for in the early days, as well as cards, frames, journals, games, toys, and books for all ages.

Over the years the business has become more than a Mecca for supplies. It provides the community with ongoing opportunities for creative inspiration through in-store classes, workshops, and free demonstrations of products and DIY projects. The stores’ knowledgeable retail staff are experienced artists familiar with new techniques and materials. Additionally, the Capitola location hosts art classes by independent instructors, so visitors of all skill levels can learn painting, drawing and other mediums from professional members of the Santa Cruz artist community.

To further promote local artists and continue their longstanding community-style services, Palace also hosts a monthly reception for every First Friday Santa Cruz. The store continues to be family owned and locally operated by the Trowbridge brothers Frank, Roy, and Gary, and their families.
