I know that it’s a little late in the afternoon for Saturday Morning Cartoons, but after all, it is summer. This is a digital sketch done in recollection of a moment. I call it “The Gaze” because The Gaze is the subject of the image, rather than the self-referential face, or the party-like scene around it.
The Gaze started out as a two-line drawing, relating between the nostril line and the rest of the facial features. However, once I got to the eyes, it was like a gradual recollection, as if seeing the eyes that I had drawn were familiar and a part of my real memory. I recalled the rest of the details in a muted groove, remembering haircuts and tattoos and patterns and platonic arms around my shoulder; sometimes when you remember one thing, lots of things come along with it.
This is The Gaze that I held one night, and I am still in recollection of the things that came along with it.
