Fire Burns in Santa Cruz

I am excited to kick off a new feature on local performance art with a bang. This is a video submission for Nocturnal Sunshine Burning Man Fire Conclave. Every year at Burning Man, there are groups of fire performers surrounding the man as he burns. These performers prepare long in advance in order to be accepted to share their skills in this honored space while the rest of the community looks on.

The piece itself is made up of different group pieces, many of which began being developed by working with a single prop. As you can see by watching the video, many of the pieces incorporated diverse layers of props to create a powerful effect. The theme for this year’s Burning Man is Carnival of Mirrors. Nocturnal Sunshine incorporated a mirrored effect into much of their choreography. The video is a thrill to watch, the performance is a blast to be a part of!
