The Tannery Arts Center has finally provided Santa Cruz with a central home for the arts, where artists can connect with each other and the general public through a variety of cultural events. For the past year, the Tannery has been wrapping up each week with the Thursday Art Market – a welcoming, casual event held in the Tannery’s enclosed courtyard and open to anyone in the community.

Since its debut, the Art Market has become an anticipated weekly event featuring experienced artists, art demonstrations, live music, and delicious food prepared on the spot by guest chefs. Admission is free for the public to browse art and artifacts produced locally by diverse artists specializing in a wide range of mediums. Visitors have the opportunity to meet artists, and learn about their creative process, and invest in local art. The event also includes entertainment by professional singers and musicians, as well as special weekly pop-up menus prepared by chefs from local restaurants.

The Tannery has been committed to accommodating artists as well as making all forms of creativity more accessible to everyone. It serves the local art community as a business center and cultural hub for the Arts Council Santa Cruz County, the Radius Gallery, Catamaran Literary Reader, the Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center, and several other small arts-related companies. Since its opening, it has established 100 affordable live-work spaces for artists in 2009, and 28 studios in 2012.

The Tannery also hosts a variety of events throughout the year in support of arts education, exhibits, performances, art tours, cultural fairs, and more. The Art Market promotes the work of artists and craftsmen at the Tannery and throughout Santa Cruz County, and provides an opportunity for artists living and working on the campus to become even more immersed in the Tannery community, as well as further engage with the public on a weekly basis.

During the Thursday Art Market the public can continue to explore the Tannery’s creative outlets by wandering through open studios, watching artists in action, and enjoying trunk shows. There are ongoing opportunities for Tannery visitors to take classes at the Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center, or view work by  local, regional and international artists at Radius Gallery. There is also a wide hallway adjacent to Radius Gallery that shares a rotating exhibit of work by Tannery artists, and is usually open to the public most days of the week.

The next Thursday Art Market will be on November 10, 2016, 4:00pm – 7:00pm.
