Working Backwards

jewelry progress pearl wire wrapped

A progress photo of a piece incorporating different pearl beads.

For this piece I changed up the order in which I usually make things. Typically, if I’m working with multiple stones I start by wrapping the largest stone. For this piece, I knew I wanted to play with the pearl beads, so thats where I started. I made the grouping with the beads and wire first, using thin wire. Next, I incorporated thicker wire around the initial piece that included the beads. I used that as my starting point to wrap the larger stone.

I enjoyed working this way. When I sat down to start this piece, I wasn’t sure which direction I wanted to go in. The large stone that I’m using for this piece is a fire agate. I also worked with a fire agate in a piece that I started last week and didn’t want to feel like I was repeating myself. Trying a different technique was a good way to step outside of my comfort zone. When I do this, it creates an opportunity for me to teach myself new tricks and techniques. I’m excited to see how I continue to develop this piece.
