Completed: Labradorite Slab

Natural wire wrapped Labradorite

I was so inspired by the natural beauty of this stone, I wanted to keep the design simple.

This week I want to feature a pendant I made with a gorgeous slab of raw labradorite.

The front side of this stone has been polished to have a smooth, uniform appearance but the back of the stone is raw, meaning that it is unpolished or treated. I prefer to work with stones that are untreated and have enough natural beauty on their own.

Before I made this pendant, my style had often incorporated wire work on the face of the stone (the front part). I enjoyed the freedom of being to weave my wire all over the stone, but realized that some of the stone’s beauty was being obscured.

To keep it simple, I chose two techniques and used them to form a cage around the stone. Enough to hold it in place, but simple enough to feature the stone without obscuring it.

On the left side of the stone, I used a wide weave technique which looks similar to a cage around the edge of the stone. I used the same weave on the right side, but I made it very thin to create a clean line of the edge of the piece.

I used a double coil technique behind the thin weave in order to create some contrast.

Voila! This is one of my favorite pieces I’ve made. Its listed online on my etsy store.
