Greg Stanley: Hemp Surf Art
In Greg Stanley’s words “I’ve always enjoyed art and fell in love with Santa Cruz the first time I came here in 1981, when I was 19. The first time I ever surfed was in 1985 off Pleasure Point. It was like magic. I discovered a composite board made from Hemp 6 years ago and began using it as my canvas. I loved how the material reacted with my oil bar and watercolor.”
Greg came to Santa Cruz at age 19 from Chico, Ca to work as a camp counselor at Kennolyn Camp in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He then lived and worked here full time as a builder and a graphic designer doing work for local clients like the Dream Inn, Joe’s Falafel and Sandwich and Sport About.
Wow, stunning artwork. It’s great to see someone come in to Santa Cruz and fall so much in love with the culture and surfing that it inspired this artwork. This is a really great feature 🙂
These pieces are deeply calming and grounding. Let me know if you do a local show, or would like to do one.
